Bicycle locks
Bicycle locks
Bicycle locks are an essential part of everyday urban cycling. To avoid having your bike stolen, it is advisable to buy a good lock that is secure, reliable, and theft-proof. Cheap locks may get you out of a jam on occasion, but they are not very useful if someone intends to steal your bike. A good rule of thumb is never to use second-hand locks. The price and model of the recommended locks vary widely.
In any case, it is not advisable to buy cheap locks if you really value your bike; spending money on a good lock will always save you greater expenses later on. It should be kept in mind that bike theft is not very common in all cities, but in cities like Madrid or Barcelona, bike theft is quite common, and here we really do have to think carefully about what type of lock to buy for our bike, whether it is a city bike, Dutch bike, road bike, touring bike, folding bike... etc.
U-locks
U-locks, also known as "U-locks", are the most secure for our bikes. This type of lock is made by major brands such as ABUS or Kryptonite; they are theft-proof and unbreakable, with tested security and a guarantee. They usually come with security keys and allow you to secure the bike frame to fixed objects in the city.
We believe it is the best lock you can buy when purchasing new bikes. Its only disadvantages are its weight, as they weigh around 1000 grams, and its portability, since they are not folding locks. The more you invest in this type of lock, the more worthwhile it is; if you have bought the bike you like so much and it has cost you money, investing in this bike lock should not be a problem.
Frame locks
This lock is also known as a Dutch lock or horseshoe lock due to its common use on Dutch bikes, Nordic-style bikes, and generally on all Nordic countries. They are classic locks that have always been used, but their only function is to lock the wheel, leaving us with no option to pedal. Their advantage is that they come built into the bikes, like most Taurus bikes and some Decathlon bike models.

Cable or spiral locks
Spiral locks are the kind you can find cheaply in any shop; they are typical "Chinese" locks, and we would say the same about frame locks: they do not offer the security needed to leave your bike unattended. Their locking mechanism usually plays a secondary role, as in most cases it can be broken with a simple bolt cutter. This type of lock is probably the most common one seen on bikes in our city, but it is the number one target for bike thieves
Of all the types of bike locks available, these account for 90 percent of attacks. This is because they are sold in any large store such as Carrefour or El Corte Inglés, but Biciclásica never recommends using these locks. Investing in a lock for your bike is like car insurance: we pay for it and do not see its usefulness until we fall victim to the theft of our most prized means of transport.
Chain locks
These are the most recommended locks because of their price, as they are somewhat more affordable than U-locks, and if we buy one from a reputable brand, we are buying quality. They also offer the advantages of flexibility for portability and for securing them to all types of objects in the city. A very good lock for your city bike.
