Bicycle wheels are easily interchangeable and are an important replacement part for keeping your bike in good condition.
Buying a set of bicycle wheels is an important decision, as you need to consider how you will use them, as well as understanding the different qualities of the wheels and the materials and sizes that are compatible with your bike, whether you are looking for wheels for a bicycle with rim brakes or thin wheels for road use, which are faster.
Backpedal wheels
Ideal for restoring old bicycles, if you are thinking of converting your road or touring bike into a minimalist bike without handlebar brakes, there is nothing better than riding like Dutch bikes with a coaster brake. Braking is done by pushing back on the pedal, and they are very safe and reliable once you get the hang of it.
Aluminium rims
Many sets of coaster brake wheels, being designed for traditional Dutch-style bicycles, are made of steel, which gives them excellent shine and durability. However, if you want lighter wheels, you will need to buy wheels with aluminium rims, which are much lighter. We also recommend paying attention to the quality of the spokes; if they can be stainless steel spokes, so much the better.
Sealed Bushings
Bicycle wheels consist of rims or hoops, spokes and hubs, which are the central part or axle of the wheel. The axles can be sealed or unsealed, with greater exposure to erosion, and can also be made of steel or aluminium. If you want your bicycle to withstand inclement weather and the passage of time better, it is important to consider sealed hubs.
Wheel dimensions
There are wheel sizes for vintage bicycles, but if you are going to change the wheels, it is the best time to switch to a current size. This way, you will be able to find tyres for your bike more easily, as tyres for older sizes such as 700A or 700B are very difficult to find. Wheels can generally be 28" or 26" (there are also many other sizes, such as 20" wheels), and within these, for example, the old 26" or 650B wheels correspond to ETRTO 584, and the new ones would be 650A or ETRTO 590.
It is also important to know whether they arewheels for road bikes where you want to use a very narrow tyre, which should not be wider than 18 mm, or whether you want wider wheels for mixed or hybrid use, which should be at least 20 mm wide. Also, if you are restoring a bicycle and it has rim brakes, you will need a special rim with a profile for rim brakes.
