Bicycle luggage rack
A luggage rack, pannier rack, pannier rack or rack is an aluminum or steel accessory in the shape of a rack that is added to the bicycle and allows you to carry luggage, panniers, baskets, boxes or even small children by attaching a purpose-built saddle to it. The racks can be mounted on the front, known as pannier racks, or on the rear of the bicycle.
There are an infinite number of sizes and types of racks and not all are compatible with all bikes. To choose yours you should pay attention to these points.
Frame type
The first thing to look at is what type of anchor has the frame of your bike, those with holes in the chainstays and tie rods or fork are the most robust and can hold up to 40 kg. For bicycles that do not have these holes there are different solutions, from clamps, to carriers that are anchored to the hub or seat post, although the latter support less weight.
Brake type
The second thing is to know which brakes you use, disc or v-brakes. If you have disc brakes, you will need a rack compatible with this system. Disc brakes are also suitable for v-brakes, cantilever and bridge brakes, but not the other way around, v-brakes are not suitable for disc brakes.
Wheel size
Last but not least is to check the size of your wheel. There are some carriers that are compatible with various wheel sizes, 24", 26", 28" etc. thanks to a movable part, but there are others that are fixed and only fit their corresponding wheel size.
Maximum weight
The maximum load weight that the rack can support must be specified. This weight is essential, since it indicates the maximum weight that can be mounted on the rack and will depend on the material from which it is made, the diameter of the rods and the quality of the welds. As a general rule, the maximum weight serves as a reference for trips or outings on paved roads or flat roads. In the case of very uneven terrain, vibrations and the rattling of the panniers create more pressure on the rack, increasing the weight on the rack from time to time. In these cases, the saddlebags should be loaded slightly below their maximum weight to withstand the occasional overloads due to the terrain.
